Best Wedding Singer in Toronto – Jonathan Michael’s Performance at Gita and Aron’s Ceremony

The wedding of Gita and Aron was a memorable wedding that I had the distinction to sing at in 2009. This was one of the most high profile weddings that I had performed at up to date. At the time, Gita Pullapilly and Aron Gaudet were up and coming film producers who had just released a documentary called “The Way We Get By” which highlighted a group of senior citizens in Bangor, Maine who greet U.S. troops at the Bangor International Airport. The documentary received endless positive reviews and won a number of film documentary awards. The Town of Maine was so taken back by their documentary that as a gift, vendors decided to freely offer their services to the couple as a way of saying “Thank You” for their work on the documentary. Even the New York Times sent their newspaper reporters to cover the wedding (even thought I was erroneously reported as being the groom’s cousin).

On Oct. 16, 2009 the couple’s wedding was hosted at Retreat at French’s Point in Stockton Springs, Me., where 90 family members and friends gathered. It was a two day drive for me from Toronto to Maine as I had a relatively late start that night and stopped over in Quebec. Checking the GPS the next day, I was under the impression that I would make it to Maine in under 3 hours as it was only showing a 280 km drive to the destination. However, I was sadly mistaken as the one lane winding roads up the hills kept me honest on the speed in addition to the logger trucks. Not sure if you have seen Steven King’s Pet Sematary but those logger trucks are as scary to drive behind as they were portrayed in the movie. Further, I had never seen so much wildlife on a road trip as I almost rammed head on into a moose that could have served as an extra for the T-Rex in any of the Jurassic Park movies. I also saw a family of bears but they were kind enough to stay on the side of the road and not cause me to put undue stress on my breaks.

After finally arriving at the destination that evening, I had to rehearse with the string quartet as we were going to be performing Schubert’s Ave Maria during the wedding ceremony. It was a very long evening but when you are doing what you love, it never seems like work.

I had an early start the following morning as many of the vendors showed up early to set up and get ready for the day. The wedding ceremony started around 1p.m. but I had to be there much earlier to set up the sound equipment, perform a sound check and rehearse again with the quartet. With the wedding taking place in early October, there was a little bit of a chill in the air but it did not take away from the beauty of the day. I was elated to start off the ceremony singing one of my favourite Italian ballads called Per Te. Shortly after, the ceremony started with Gita being escorted down the aisle by her father. It was quite a breathtaking venue at the retreat at French’s Point as the backdrop was the beautiful Penobscot Bay. Shortly after the readings, it was time for the Ave Maria to be sung. The string quartet was an amazingly skilled group of musicians and the song was performed to the delight of the couple and to their guests. Following the ceremony and well into the evening, numerous guests and family members approached me let me know how much they enjoyed the songs and my voice.

I was even advised but numerous people that the music in the ceremony helped to create such as positive tone that continued well into the evening. There is no doubt that the ambiance created by the music helped to further enhance the special day that was created by the vendors in Maine and the venue of French’s Point.

Since then, both Gita and Aron have continued to excel in their field and have produced and directed numerous movies (such as Beneath The Harvest Sky). It was a pleasure to be part of their special day and to celebrate in what was one of the most beautiful outdoor weddings I’ve experienced.
